Group Assignment:  Read "Pedagogy of Poverty Versus Good Teaching" - Martin Haberman

Begin to critically analyze the text (construct/build meaning).
You are not summarizing the essay to present.
Pick something specific within the article that you wish to discuss as a group.
You have the autonomy of presenting anyway you want

Medium:
  • If you are using multi-media, please bring device to use in class that can be used with projector(ex. laptop computer)
  • If using power point, save in USB drive
  • If using YouTube, keep to minimal
  • If handing out material, please make sufficient copies

Rubric:
  • Everyone must participate
  • I will be providing FEEDBACK for each individual group
  • ORIGINALITY of presentation will be taken into account
  • Looking for thoughtful ANALYSIS and interpretations of the TEXT (Article)

ESSAY:
  • Due Next Class meeting
  • 3 pages /  You can split this up between group members
  • I don't want three seperate response papers
  • I want a unified paper / cohesive / organized essay
  • Construct meaning, use your writing experience, use discussions in class to guide your paper
  • Use academic related information that we have used in class if you want (Pedagogy/Metacognition//Standardized Testing/Rhetorical Reading)

    • Thank you for the handout
    • Good job summarization
    • Good job breaking down the essay into the different subsections
    • I think ya’ll could have talked a little about each section more in depth
    • Low income families  how does Habberman talk about this portion of the essay?
    • Presentation is a little more than reading off a paper, consider this for future reference
    Rayvan / Brenda / German
    • Thank you for introducing the definition of “Pedagogy”
    • Good job in summarization
    • Classroom like a Hospital  Like a prison according to Habberman
    • Students need to give feedback, all students learn different
    Deborah / Valeria / Rebecca
    • Does not work
    • Authoritarian  Elaborate
    • What is good teaching? Collaboration, asking questions
    • Good job quickly summarizing info. I think ya’ll did start being more specific, wish ya’ll would have gone into more detail with the authoritarian part
    • Presentation wise, it’s good to face the audience and not just read slides
    Alondra /Julissa / Robert
    • Good job summarizing the essay briefly
    • Established that it does not work according to Habberman
    • Teachers burn out  what do ya’ll think about this?
    • Education has to change? How do ya’ll think it should change?
    • Presentation wise, again reading slides, good to have some information and discuss the rest with class
    Dariana / Mark / Isaac
    • Thank you for the Habberman info!! Awesome
    • Good job introducing the definition of “Pedagogy”
    • Good job elaborating and not just reading slides
    • Nice slide show
    • I’m not sure if ya’ll completely understood what Habberman considers to be good teaching but for the most part ya’ll discussed it appropriately
    Juan / Brandon / Elibeth
    • Pedagogy is not a professional methodology
    • Good job discussing in your own words
    • Handouts would probably have been a good idea
    • You lose your audience when you’re just reading from a paper
